Swingin' SixtiesPublished on April 11, 2010

Having completed my first year as Editor In Chief at Ottawa At Home I am still waiting for the fun to stop.

I had anticipated working my way into some of Ottawa's finest homes, restaurants and shops. What I did not foresee was falling in love with the nation's capital -- thanks to a sense of renewed respect and pride. This issue is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to tapping into new trends and showcasing the local talent of our city, which boasts a style, flair and pizzazz that rivals any metropolis!

In an attempt to bring the latest looks in decor and lifestyle to readers, our features play up the popularity of swinging back in time to embrace the revolutionary vibe of the sixties and pay tribute to the era's vintage decor. "Capital Shops" checks out a store that will help you create this look in your own home, and then we shopped a little more to help you "get the look" from other stores around the city.

Araina Bond visits a home that resonates with mid-century modern design and talks to the homeowner who cleverly dresses the part. If you are a fan of the wildly popular "Mad Men" TV series this feature will most definitely appeal! And, as only Laura Byrne Paquet can do, we put it all in perspective in "On Second Thought."

On the subject of "Mad Men," Ottawa At Home checks out some very clever ad-men. These are charismatic characters with charm, wit, and talent. If you are looking for some creative genius, they are worth getting to know ...

Readers with a penchant for water and the desire to be wise with their real-estate investment will be interested to read Jane Whiting's piece on the resurgence of backyard pools. According to local experts, cool pools are not only trendy but a sought-after feature with certain homebuyers.

Photo editor Mark Holleron's talents shine in our "Home Profile" featuring a recently renovated uptown house with Nantucket style. The photos will wow readers, as will the decor that showcases the fine work of our "Designer At Home" Irene Langlois.

We can't call this a spring issue without embracing the garden. Andrea Douglas visits two women who bring their passion for plants into their lives, every day of the year. The influence of spring is also felt in Korey Kealey's "Food Thoughts." Eggs are symbolic of re-birth and spring awakening, as well as packed with protein.

Paula Roy had fun with our '60s theme and came up with a few local lunch spots that would appeal to Jackie O and her crowd -- perhaps they'll do the same for you and yours! If you think you might need a refresher course on table manners before dressing the part and heading out, read "Let's Dish" with etiquette expert Diane Craig.

And finally, Catherine Clark introduces us to a woman who has made her love for children her life's work.

Peace and love,
