Nothing says summer quite like enjoying a picnic dinner under the stars, and that's not all you'll get at Odyssey Theatre's performance of The Financier (Turcaret). They have teamed up, for the third time, with Signatures Restaurant at Le Cordon Bleu to bring a night of delicious food and great outdoor entertainment to the city of Ottawa. The Theatre Under the Stars program opens on July 30th until August 23rd. Every Wednesday to Saturday night, theatregoers can purchase a picnic basket and pick it up from Signatures, then eat it outside at Strathcona Park where Odyssey Theatre puts on a performance that won't disappoint.
"I think the show is going to be really spectacular this year," Dana Uzarevic, General Manager of Odyssey Theatre said. "Our stage is placed between two, old gorgeous trees. There is a frame of greenery around [it]Ö we really use the park as much as we can as a platform for our performances."
When the two originally partnered for this event two years ago, theatregoers could enjoy fine dining at Signatures before the show. While this was successful, Uzarevic said they really wanted to explore more options and figure out how "to embrace the location of Strathcona Park."
"It's a beautiful park with lots of green grass and picnic tables," Uzarevic said. Switching to picnic baskets also made the event more affordable, without giving up the delicious menu.
The picnic baskets are prepared by Signatures' chef Yannick Anton and include Camembert cheese and baguette, herb roasted chicken breast, roasted tomato Provencal, seasonal vegetables, pasta salad, fruit salad, macaroons and water.
This year's show is directed by Laurie Stevens, as she returns to Odyssey Theatre as Artistic Director for the first time since 2005.
