In the midst of a long winter Holt Renfrew brought spring to the capital with a successful fundraiser for the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.

The event, Cruise Into Spring, was co-chaired by Mary Taggart and Melissa Shabinsky and consisted of an engaging appearance by Holt Renfrew VP of Fashion, Lisa Tant. Lisa flew in from Toronto in time to pick looks from the Ottawa store for a fashion show that coordinated with a power point presentation on spring trends. The crowd pondered warm weather and sipped barefoot wines, as they took in the top trends from Lisa, former editor in chief of Flare magazine and Canadian fashion icon.

Shopping was a big part of the evening with 10% of the sales going towards the cause, so in the name of charity, picking up a patterned dress or chic shoes felt almost mandatory! Lisa's advice made the task of getting closets on trend for spring a lot less daunting.  Guests left the event armed with the knowledge of how to look put-together as soon as the warm weather hits. First on the list is to embrace pattern, its big for spring. The patterned dress is a wardrobe must have.

Plenty of practical advice was tossed out including an awareness for street style which is much more realistic than runway glamour. Lisa advised on taking the 1-2-3 test to ensure that pieces have the versatility to be worn 3 ways. Can it be worn dressed up as well as dressed down? Would a floral blazer work just as easily with jeans as it does with a solid print dress? If the answer is yes then the purchase is worth the splurge.

Well-dressed closets will show off black and white pieces in graphic patterns, athletic inspired outfits called urban sport- think country club smart with a bit of an edge!  Colour takes the form of pastels with soft pink and blue showing up strong.

Even beauty was addressed and keeping up with trends was made to seem simple. Update your look with an orange lipstick, which works well with the natural glow that's right on trend.

Lisa's top five pics for spring include:

- The button down shirt

- Cropped trousers

- The cropped boxy jacket, worn with jeans

- The printed dress

- The wrap sarong skirt
