How do you define the personal style of a woman who always looks absolutely fabulous, no matter where she is or what she's doing?
Claire Greenberg is a chic fashionista, whether she is working out in lululemons, picking the kids up from school in skinny designer jeans, or socialising with friends in one of her favourite, softly-feminine dresses.
Now Claire is applying the same distinctive flair for fashion to dress up her beautiful West Wellington Village home. Her carefully selected furnishings reflect her casually elegant wardrobe - a tasteful mix of contemporary designs with classic lines and colours. While she chooses everything with a cultivated discipline to find just the right piece, Claire works to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
The neutral décor in the luxurious four bedroom home is a perfect canvas for the enthusiastic collector to fill with unique furniture and original artwork in a palette of muted, earth-toned colours and fabrics.
"Every bit of furniture in this house is me - everything about it is me! I love it and the kids love it," says Claire whose latest passion is buying artwork to fill the expansive wall spaces. "My new thing is to find art - and I've already moved pieces a couple of times to mix it up and see where they fit best."
Just like her clothes, Claire's home changes constantly as she lives in it and allows the style to evolve. Every room has a clean, minimal look that is stamped with her signature.
In the same way that her gym outfits have to be stylish and comfortable, the stunning kitchen and family room are designed for everyday living.
The spacious French country kitchen is packed with antiqued wood cabinetry anchored with a massive centre island. What Claire likes best about the kitchen is that the open, flowing space makes her girlfriends feel at home and they instinctively help out.
Her signature in this room, however, is a large pedestal table by the patio doors. "I've always wanted a round table. It's really me because there's no head at the table - everyone can easily see and talk to each other."
The wood-beamed family room, with a built-in entertainment centre and fireplace, invites you to come in and sit down. "This is where we live," says Claire who has furnished the room with a big, comfy sofa and soft leather armchairs in taupe and warm browns. Her special touches here include a custom-made leather wing chair embossed with wild horses, which she found with the help of interior designer Susan Firestone, and a floral painting from Galerie St-Laurent + Hill.
Dark wood panelling in the nearby home office gives it a studious atmosphere. This makes it the ideal spot for the kids to do their homework and spend time on the computer. An enormous desk and a lovely cushioned window-seat make it a family-friendly room.
High Living Glam
Soothing, cream-coloured walls and dark-stained wood floors with beautifully woven area rugs make a seamless flow from room to room. But the glam is pumped up in the formal dining room and living room, where Claire hosts friends and fundraising events in high entertaining style.
A traditional dining table that sits up to 12 guests, partnered with an elegant crystal chandelier and marble-topped buffet, shows off Claire's more formal side. For smaller or intimate gatherings, the space includes a charming alcove where a mini dining room comes complete with its own prep area.
The classic style is repeated in the main living room, where a baby grand piano takes centre stage. Along with impressive paintings, it complements the opulent room which features a fireplace framed in finely-crafted, off-white wood.
A few steps away, the focus of the home's grand entrance is a sweeping staircase that leads to an open balcony and four family bedrooms.
Claire's flair for mixing and matching comes together in her glorious bedroom retreat. The French colonial bed, with a carved wood frame and upholstered head board, is fitted with a vintage-looking quilt in multi-coloured fabrics and scattered with jewelled cushions.
An intriguing equestrian armoire with metal hinges is a recent find that contrasts nicely with the femininity of the room. But it's definitely not needed as a wardrobe, because the double walk-in closets provide everything a true fashionista can dream of!
One of the incredibly well-organized closets is dedicated to indoor clothing, including special drawers for workout clothes, separate casual and dressy sections, and eye-level racks for her designer shoes. The other room-sized closet holds outerwear with a leather jacket section and an area for Claire's beloved collection of boots.
In the dazzling marble ensuite, a white pedestal bathtub in classic vintage style is Claire's most treasured delight. Perhaps long, leisurely baths will help this busy woman contemplate her next project to accessorize the home for a perfect finishing touch. It's a challenge that her sophisticated sense of style can easily handle.
