I was the lead designer on a project called Extreme Makeover Kindness Edition which took place at the Good Companions Seniors' Centre.

The centre is dedicated to servicing seniors with disabilities and special needs and is located in the heart of downtown Ottawa.

My first visit to assess the space was Jan. 7, and immediately I knew I was faced with more than I had bargained for. The request was large.

Six other Ottawa area designers along with local Contractor D.E. Kinkade Konstruction LTD came to the rescue.

Our first meeting was Jan. 13. We went over the initial plans for the space. Along with enjoying a glass or two, of wine decisions were made.

We concluded that in order to get large impact from the space, a mixture of colours was needed. This would encourage eyes to move around the large area and land on each proposed vignette.

We realized fairly quickly that the space needed to be warmed up, it was very institutional and fabrics and accessories should be added to soften. A basic layout was done and final thoughts were discussed.

Donations came in right up to the last moment and the question was, will everything match? The Upper Room generously offered up a sofa, but it was RED leather. Hmmm, we already had the colour scheme ... could we make it work? Regardless, we had to!

We did not have donations for accessories, so the girls and I all chipped in and went out shopping for bargain pieces to make it all work.

On Feb. 18, during United Way Kindness Week, we started the transformation, and with a lot of hard work, dedication and love it all came together.

It was an incredible experience for all of us. Thank you to my team of designers, D.E. Kinkade Konstruction Ltd. and all the local Businesses who donated items.

To the staff and members of the centre, may the comfort and warmth of your new space wrap its arms around you each time you enter, and may you enjoy it for many years to come.
