OWNERS: Jim Robertson and Maciej Fijalkowski opened The White Monkey three years ago. Both have other jobs, hence the eccentric opening hours, Thursday through Sunday. Robertson is "the picker," finding the treasures that line the store, while Fijalkowski is Mr. Fix-it, restoring furniture to its former glory. Robertson used to own a store in the ByWard Market selling reproduction pine furniture. "Ever since I gave it up I've missed it," he says, "and I've always wanted to have a really nice retro-furniture store." For Robertson, buying things for the store, "is like a treasure hunt, but you've got to have an eye for it." Clearly he does. There are plenty of treasures here to work with any style.
