WHO: Kilborn's on the Rideau.
WHERE: 10 Drummond Street, (Hwy 42) in the heart of the Rideau Lakes at Newboro.
WHAT: Enter into what seems like an old-fashioned general store, with a bar counter and friendly service staff, then move along to one of the best selections of footwear you might ever see, together with giftware, housewares and furnishings all in 26,000 square feet of retail space. Kilborn's is a veritable general store with style and panache that makes it a tourist destination and a good reason to head out for a daytrip into cottage country. It offers a vast selection of furniture and décor for the cottage, including vintage-inspired appliances from Elmira Stove Works.
BEHIND THE SCENES: Eleven years ago, Greg and Anna Hill bought The Old Village Grocery Store and have expanded it to now include three buildings. They employ many family members, along with other helpful and knowledgeable staff, so that the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.
ADDED BONUS: The Hill family also owns the Stagecoach Inn next door. Serving casual and gourmet fare, the restaurant is open year-round and extends its hours in summer to cater to a seasonal crowd. Call 613-272-2900 for reservations.
