Modecor-inspired interiors

For interior decorator Maureen Coates, the log home she and her husband Mike built on Centennial Lake is a retreat for their family. While they bought the property in 2000, they researched and waited five years before beginning construction of their “Discovery Dream Homes” cottage.

As a decorator, Maureen made modifications to the plan and, as a wife, she adjusted her own ideas to meet her husband half way on a few issues. The result is a décor that showcases some masculine influences with Maureen’s talented touches for the overall effect. Together, they have created a relaxed family living space that is well-thought out and dressed up with the flair of a professional.

Designer Tips

Home Away From Home

Maureen’s cottage-style decorating is the antithesis of conventional home décor. Life at the cottage should be simple, which means no fuss and practically maintenance-free. Easy-care fabrics, as well as wood, stone, whicker, iron and natural finds make up the bulk of her décor. Toss in some antiques and candle glow, and the look is complete.

Give and Take

Respecting Mike’s passion for outdoorsy-inspired décor, Maureen uses fishing gear as whimsical decoration on the sun porch.

Knowing that Maureen has a penchant for pillows, Mike concedes to the fact that the décor is moveable to allow for sofa lounging!

Cottage decor should reflect the personality of everyone sharing the space. Decorating rules need not apply to every aspect of a well decorated retreat.
