The most stylish man in Ottawa reveals
why this city is considered a trendsetter.

Painting a picture of Ottawa as the style capital of Canada seems like a stretch for a city referred to as a “town” and considered to be a style sleeper in comparison with Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver. Spend time with Joe Sheridan, the general manager of Holt Renfrew’s Ottawa store, and you’ll envision a more cosmopolitan capital.

Sephora , The Blue , Ottawa

“Ottawa clients embody all that is most fashionable today,” touts Mr. Sheridan. Also known to his regulars (and there are many) as “Mr. Holt Renfrew,” Sheridan states that Ottawa is “on top of its game.”

A city known for high quality, conservative style, the nation’s capital is right on trend.

Three years ago, Sheridan was plucked from the cosmetics chain Sephora by visionary Holt Renfrew management, to manage and re-vamp the Ottawa store. Re-vamp it he did – making dramatic staff and merchandise changes, along with geographical modifications. The changes were surprising to some who saw Ottawa as more conservative than the brands being introduced. An impressive collection of high-end dress jeans was launched, along with up-style names like Akris Punto and an Armani collection for women, as well as Etro for men and women. And they were embraced just as Sheridan predicted. “With economic stresses felt globally, consumers are buying carefully and modestly, focusing on quality merchandise with subtle detailing,” the savvy retailer says, stating that this is the way Ottawans have always shopped. Sheridan claims that Ottawa is more critical of itself than it should be. He observes the city to be very stylish, with a subtle, low-key quality that is being mimicked country-wide. “Ottawa people are well travelled but loyal to their own city. They know what is available in the fashion world. But, given the opportunity to buy locally – they do,” states the style guru. Holt Renfrew seeks to service this loyalty and it is one of the reasons that the Ottawa store is maintained as an up-to-date style resource. The city has international appeal as a capital, with a strong embassy influence and a vibrant tourist industry.

With trends leaning towards understated sophistication, Ottawa can consider itself a trendsetter. With his “insider” knowledge, Mr. Sheridan reveals that: “Our clients, here in Ottawa, are very fashion aware. They understand current fashion, and like beautiful quality and beautiful details done in a “quiet” way – that makes the Ottawa market completely in-step with what is hot for spring.”

The Cardigan – a modern alternative to the blazer to wear to the office, and a great layering piece to have on-hand as the weather starts to warm up.

The Ankle Baring Pant – the newest pant silhouette is lean and stops just at the ankle. It’s a very slimming silhouette. Dressy or casual – this is a very versatile pant style.

The Dress – A dress that pays tribute to the club house trend, in a classic print, seen through a quirky lens.

For Men

The Navy Blazer – this menswear classic was on every spring runway. Shown with grey flannel trousers or chinos, this Blazer looks newest paired back to a pair of distressed jeans with a great dress shirt and tie.

The Blue Shirt – another menswear classic re-invented for spring. In all shades ranging from powder blue to navy.

The Summer Suit – Perfect for hot days when looking professional is a must.

Accessories

Accessories are more important than ever as we see a lot more “toned down” collections on the runway. One of the newest looks is the extra long “Statement Necklace” – worn in multiples or singularly with bobbles, beads or links. These necklaces are not just for evening they are a fun way to dress up a day look. Written by Mary Taggart
